Do you know? The name of Mesopelagic Zone comes from a greek word μέσον meaning middle. The nominal depth delineation of this zone is between 200 meters (656 feet) and 1000 meters (3281 feet) below the ocean surface. Due to the limited sunlight penetration to the depths of this zone, it is frequently termed the Twilight Zone. It is in this zone that we begin to see the bioluminescent creatures. A great variety of strange and bizarre life forms can be found here. It is also notable for significant carbon storage and vertical movement of large carbon stores downward into the deeper oceans.

Bathypelagic -1000 M-

Do you know? The name of Bathypelagic Zone comes from a greek word βαθύς, which means deep. This zone ranges from 1000 meters (3281 feet) down to 4000 meters (13,124 feet). Because of its depth and associated light deprivation, the bathypelagic zone is also known as the Midnight Zone, virtually no sunlight penetrates into the ocean at these depths. The only light down here is produced by bioluminescent creatures themselves. Creatures that live down this far have to withstand water pressure reaching 5850 psi (For reference, the average pressure at the Earth’s surface is 14.7 psi). In spite of the great pressure, a surprisingly large number of creatures live down here. Animals living in the Bathypelagic Zone also tend to have a poor ability to swim. This adaptation is the result of low predator density and reduced visibility.

Abyssopelagic -4000 M-

Do you know? The Abyssopelagic Zone is also known as the abyssal zone, or the abyss, the name "Abyss" derives from the Greek word ἄβυσσος, meaning bottomless. At depths of 4000m (13,123ft) to 6000m (19,685ft), this zone remains in perpetual darkness and never receives daylight. There is a pronounced drop in the number of species and the quantity of animals as one passes into this zone from the Bathypelagic Zone above. And its permanent inhabitants are able to withstand the immense pressures of the ocean depths, up to 76 megapascals (11,000 psi). Many abyssal creatures have underslung jaws to sift through the sand to catch food. These regions are also characterised by continuous cold and lack of nutrients. The Abyssopelagic Zone has temperatures around 2°C to 3°C (35 °F to 37 °F) through the large majority of its mass.

Hadopelagic -6000 M-

Do you know? The Hadopelagic Zone, also known as the hadal zone or trench zone, is named after the realm of Hades, the underworld in Greek mythology. It is the delineation for the deepest trenches in the ocean. This zone is found from a depth of around 6000 metres (20,000 ft) to the bottom of the ocean. It is believed that most life at this depth is sustained by marine snow or the chemical reactions around thermal vents. The low nutrient level and lack of sunlight create hostile living conditions in which few species are able to exist. As no sunlight reaches this layer of the ocean, deep sea creatures have reduced eyesight, with very large eyes for receiving only bioluminescent flashes. Most of the bottom-dwelling creatures lack any pigmentation, because coloration is not useful in an environment with no light. The deepest known part of Hadopelagic Zone extends to 10,911 meters (35,814 ft).At such depths， the pressure exceeds 1100 standard atmospheres (110 MPa; 16,000 psi).
